The financial planning profession is growing faster than ever. On August 18, 2026, CFP Board announced that the July 2026 CFP® Certification Exam drew 3,621 candidates — the largest July sitting in the exam’s history — underscoring why the distinction between a Certified Financial Planner and a financial advisor matters more than ever for consumers choosing professional guidance.

What Happened
The July 14–21 testing window saw 3,621 candidates sit for the exam, breaking all previous July records. The pass rate came in at 66%. Diversity milestones were also set: 1,011 women candidates (a July record) and 834 racially and ethnically diverse candidates (also a July record), making this the third most diverse CFP® exam of all time. According to CFP Board via GlobeNewswire, 75% of candidates were under 40 years old, and 44% were under 30 — a clear generational wave entering the profession.
Why Candidates Are Pursuing the CFP
Post-exam surveys reveal the top motivation is demonstrating expertise (39%), closely followed by distinguishing themselves as a fiduciary (33%). Nearly two-thirds of candidates (64%) received employer financial support for their path to certification — a sign that financial firms are actively investing in a credentialed workforce. CFP Board CEO K. Dane Snowden noted: “Record exam participation is worth celebrating, but the story is bigger than growth alone.”
What This Means for Consumers
With more than 109,000 CFP® certifications now held nationwide, consumers have a growing pool of qualified planners to choose from. The surge in fiduciary-minded candidates reinforces the value of working with a credentialed professional — someone legally required to act in your best interest. The next CFP® Certification Exam is scheduled for October 29–November 5, 2026, with registration already open.
